Retouching or colored reintegration of paint layer lacunas is the the last phase of painting restoration. Several types of retouching exist.
The most complex is the illusionist technique. The objective is simple: the retouching must be completely invisible.
The pointillist technique consists of applying small dots of color which optically recreate the illusion of a uniform color at a distance. However, the retouch is visible close up.
The trataggio technique was developed after World War II and is particularly well adapted to primitive paintings from the 12th to 15th centuries. It consists of juxtaposing small vertical lines of pure or mixed color. The retouch disappears at a distance, but is quite visible close up.
