Mise en extension

Stretching is a technique that is very important and very often neglected. When a painting’s canvas has retracted under the effect of moisture variations, the paint layer no longer has enough room and forms blisters in the form of a «roof. » These raised places can be consolidated only if the canvas is extended on an extensible stretcher, which slowly pulls the canvas back to its original size. If the blister is consolidated without first extending the canvas, the paint layer will flake and disappear. The physical integrity of the work will be definitively damaged.
