The binocular magnifying glass is a capital and indispensable instrument for the restorer. It allows a considerable augmentation of visual acuity and to study and work with artworks on a microscopical scale. This instrument allows us to understand in detail and depth the superimposition and the interpenetration of the layers, which can lead to the detection of a false signature or a layer of repainting which would not be visible with UV or infrared examination.
The binocular magnifying glass also allows us to observe as closely as possible the reaction of solubility micro-tests with solvents in order to determine the degree of polymerization and fragility. This can allow us to determine, for example, that a work initially dated to the 17th century dates, in fact, to the 19th century.
The binocular magnifying glass is also quite useful during scalpel scraping, a technique that is used to separate two layers that are not chemically fused. Without the binocular magnifying glass, it is impossible to do such work with precision and skill.
