Gessoing or structural reintegration of paint layer lacunas serves to recreate paint structures before retouching. Gessos are made from a base of diluted paste, which is applied with spatula and brush. A gesso should never overflow or cover the original paint layer, and its structure must be identical to the original surrounding structure. Gessoing is always conducted with raking light.
