The restorer’s work always begins with a study of the artwork
- Physical history
- Material composition
- Material condition
- Treatment procedure proposal
This step is necessary in order to understand the work and its proper conservation and restoration. Depending on the owner’s wishes, the study can be very detailed and form the subject of a written report.
The study of a work is comprised of several observation stages. It is possible to collect certain data visually with the unaided eye – tears, visible repainting, deformations of the support, or blisters of the paint layer.
After this step has been completed, we use other methods of analysis, such as ultraviolet and infrared light, the binocular magnifying glass, or radiography, to see what is not visible to the unaided eye.
