Vacuum lining is a technique that I particularly like. When a painting on canvas is too tear-damaged, we have no choice but to reinforce it with a new canvas that will support it. We have many techniques available for this kind of work, notably lining and vacuum lining. In my opinion, lining is a complicated intervention that can have dangerous consequences for the artwork if the technique is not perfectly mastered. Lining requires the use of heat and pressure. Together, they present a considerable risk for the work’s original impastos.
With vacuum lining, the original work is applied on a supporting canvas with an intermediate adhesive. The ensemble is covered with a supple envelope sealed at its edges. A vacuum pump aspirates the air under the envelope, which flattens the painting on the supporting canvas, preserving the impastos, as there is no pressure on the crests of the painting.
