When a work’s canvas is torn, it is necessary to consolidate the tears. We practice the “thread-to-thread” technique, which consists of putting the broken threads next to each other and sealing them with an adhesive which will durably keep them in place. This operation can be long and fastidious, but must be perfectly executed. If it is not, these deformations will inevitably appear on the other side. This operation is a basic procedure that must not be neglected under the pretext that it will not be seen once the work has been treated with putty and retouched.
Consolidation is like a surgical operation, and we use the tools that allow us to work with the highest degree of precision possible.
If a tear is not consolidated rapidly, it risks spreading as the canvas retracts. Canvas is made of cellulose, which is highly reactive to hygrometric variations that promote retraction.
